VC & Kobe: Daily Double

Hey, Big Aristotle, The Mag's Ric Bucher has an answer for you and your -- SHOT! -- sidekick.

I'm in Toronto to catch the Kobe-Vince Show. So is Shaq, fresh from collecting his LSU diploma, and Alex Trebek -- Mr. Jeopardy himself. Alex is sitting courtside, directly across from me. Trebek, enlisted to introduce the halftime entertainment, is also in town to select qualifiers for his show. He finds it necessary to mention over the P.A. that 400-some Ontarians were smart enough to qualify. I chalk this bit of bragging up to that well-known Canadian inferiority complex. (Which is apparently contagious: American-born VC, after having his shot swatted by Shaq, trudges back to the bench, sees a Raptors' media guide on the scorer's table, smacks his likeness and shouts, "I suck!")

But all that patriotism still can't get a Canuck ex-pat to root for the home team -- Trebek is overtly cheering for L.A, even though he's attending his first NBA game. Even more astounding: the tres chic 60-year-old is wearing a baggy pair of jeans, complete with a carpenter's hammer loop.

Kobe also impresses, dropping 40 and forcing only a handful of shots. Vince finishes with an honorable 31, but he can't conceal his competition with Kobe for the title of league's best young player. At one point, Kobe pulls up on a break and drains a 19-footer over VC. Then Vince, mouth curled with disdain, posts up Kobe and impatiently waves for the ball. He gets it and casually buries a step-back J with an extra high arc. Lakers win in OT, but as Trebek might say, "A rivalry just begun."

The answer: How would you describe the relationship between Kobe Bryant and Vince Carter?
