Friend of the Devils

Oh Jersey. You are in trouble. More trouble than a jackknifed trailer truck at the George Washington Bridge during rush hour.

We're not talking about the Devils here. The team will be fine. We're talking about the state of New Jersey and its fans. They are entering a world of pain.

Because Goldberg is livid.

The WCW star leaned against a cement wall after Game 3, glowering and shaking his head. He whispered to Devils forward Scott Gomez. "Should I say how I felt about tonight's game, Gomer?"

Gomez nodded.

And then Goldberg went off.

"I'm pissed," he said, raising his voice as if it was a steel chair. "Seriously pissed. These fans take this team for granted. I was glued to the ice with 10 seconds left, down 3-1. And these people boo. It's embarrassing. Win, lose, or draw, you gotta back the home team."

Goldberg then stopped himself. He was letting his emotions get the best of him. He looked away.

Then his face came alive again. A scowl surfaced, as if Big Sexy was coming down the aisle. He seemed to want to rip his shirt off.

"I'm gonna catch s--- for this, but I'm right," Goldberg said. "I don't have a problem speaking my mind."

Goldberg has been a hockey fan for 10 years. "The fights!" he says. "I love the violent games. The blood the other night – I loved it!" He met Gomez last year in Dallas right after the Devils won the championship. Goldberg came to the rink that night as a guest of Brett Hull. He sat with Hull's wife. But as wrestlers often do, Goldberg turned heel. Outside the locker room after the game, Gomez invited the former Dawg to join him for a swig from Stanley. "What am I gonna do?" Goldberg says defensively. "Not drink out of the Cup?" The two have been buds ever since.

Goldberg insists he didn't bail out on Brett, but tonight he was wearing a Devils cap and shredding the locals like George "The Animal" Steele used to rip into a turnbuckle. "These are the two best teams in hockey," he concluded. "This is a real slap in the face."

A real slap in the face. Not a fake one.

Big trouble, Jersey.
