Back on the road

The Mag's Bruce Feldman is on the college camp circuit with Michael Vick's brother Marcus. In this installment, Marcus leaves his home state of Virginia and heads to Terp country and Maryland football camp.

After spending three days in Charlottesville, I think we all were ready to leave. The cafeteria food did Marcus in. As for me, it was the s-l-o-o-o-w drivers. The place made my mom's neighborhood in south Florida seem like Indy.

The drive to Maryland was pretty uneventful -- although I got to hear far too much about our photographer Serge's childhood. Seems Beverley Hills Cop came out about the time Serge was 12 and every person he met would ask him if he wanted a Lemon Twist is a less-than-masculine voice. "You don't know how cruel kids can be," he tried explaining. Also, Serge apparently drank too much water before we got into the car, because he kept demanding we stop or else we were going to have "an accident." Did I mention that Serge is 27 and the trip to the Maryland campus took 4 1/2 hours?

The vibe around the Terps camp was more intense than it was at Virginia. The kids were bigger and looked much older, even though both events were geared towards high school-aged kids. Unlike UVA's camp, this one allowed players to practice with helmets and shoulder pads, something that Marcus and buddy Brendan Hill didn't realize. So they had to wait in line to be fitted and issued loaners, and the 93-degree heat didn't do any wonders for their dispositions, especially after being cooped up in a car for four-and-a-half hours.

As the waited, I got to spend a few hours chatting with new Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen, who is still getting used to all the different hats head coaches wear. While we were talking in his air conditioned office that overlooks the field at Byrd Stadium, there were some 450 campers on the field getting measured and tested.

In his home state of Virginia, players have seen Little Vick play and know he's big-time. Here though, Marcus isn't a celebrity among the campers -- and his peers are more than willing to let him know they think he'll never be as good as his brother.

Truth is, the trip is getting to all of us. Marcus is tired of having a camera in his face every time he throws a pass. Brendan, Marcus' star WR -- is living and dying with every pass thrown his direction and is tired of stressing over whether he has looked impressive enough to get a scholarship offer. Vick mentor Tommy Reamon is tired of chasing around the two seventh graders he is babysitting while attending to Marcus and Brendan's every whim. Serge is tired of touting around a 30-pound camera bag, and I am tired of Serge. If I hear one more thing about Lemon Twists, cruel kids, Bronson Pinchot or Serge's thimble-sized bladder, I am going to go crazy.

Better yet, I am going to the beach.
