Steve Wilson: There aren't any. I beg to differ, there Steve. Look it up! "Sand traps" exist nowhere in the rules of golf. They are called bunkers. I'll defer to the late great Archie Bunker, here, Steve, and respond to that with a Bronx cheer. Michael Timmons: Because course designers are son's of beaches. Ci. Jerome Tovey: Sand traps are there so that when Tiger gets smoking they can put out the fire. But not for long. Dan Kennedy: Sand traps function as giant litter boxes for golfers like Phil Mickelson so they won't mess up the course when they pee their pants under pressure. Speaking of Tiger. Joseph DeSimone: Golf used to be a game that was only for the very rich. And the very bored. They filled the traps with diamonds, to show off their wealth. Talk about raking it in! When normal people started playing, they'd steal all the diamonds and the courses were forced to switch to sand. Not nearly as valuable, but a whole lot easier on the clubs. And now, for the Irish perspective, we turn once again to Brendan Walsh, in another installment of Paddy on the Spot: As ye know, the Scots invented golf. Aye. Now in Scotland, much like the Auld Sod, it rains all the bleedin time so any kind of sunshine is a thing to be celebrated. As if we need a reason. So the Scotties built these sand bunkers at various locations on the links to whence they would drop club and gallop off, complete with their wee picnic baskets, in the rare occasion that the aforementioned sun should show its face. When the sun pissed off behind the inevitable cloud all of thirty seconds later, our boys would simply utter "Och, I'll nayver get me tan t'imprayss the lassies noo," and resume their game. Now that's good craic!
