The Turkeys Strike Back
ESPN The Magazine

After a brief hiatus while the Fleming File changed networks, we returned to the Web last week with the annual Sports Turkeys of the Year. The column generated, oh, about six jillion emails. So to help us all get reacquainted, we thought we'd share some of them with you.

My Vote for Sports Turkey of the Year is Your Mom, for raising the biggest Butthead in the Media. Your comments about George O'Leary are beneath contempt.
--Mick

O.K. Mom, take it away.

Dear Mick,

Shame on you. My son David is not the biggest you-know-what in the media. I know he sometimes goes on the Interweb and says weird things trying to be a funny writer but it is not necessary to insult someone's mother to get your point across. Maybe you're right. Maybe George O'Leary isn't the Turkey of the Year. Maybe it's you.
--Rosanna Fleming

Ouch. You just got faced by my mom, Mick. That's gotta hurt.

Congratulations, you are the new and improved Flem File's first ever WHYLO of the Week.

What's a WHYLO? Say it loud and proud: WHO HELPED YOU LOG ON?

Now, if for any reason Mick is unable to fulfill his duties as this week's reigning WHYLO, our first runner-up, Brett, will take his place. Brett qualified with this simple gem: You are a Jack ass.

Not bad really. But here's a little suggestion: when writing in to call someone a moron, make sure you spell "jackass" correctly.

Other runners-up included:

Don't write stupid s--- about stuff you don't know about.
--Jimmy

Your column was not funny, nor relevant. Better luck next time.
--Joel

If you don't watch sports you should cover them for SI or Playboy.
--Tom

Amazingly, not all the emails had to be opened by bomb-sniffing dogs.

A fond welcome back to the FlemFile. CNNSI was undeserving of such a fine column.
--Stu

Welcome back to the world of Internet sportswriting, it's been considerably more boring since you left us.
--Kurt

Glad to see you back in action. I was sorry to see that those Lousy Bastards at your previous Web site saw fit to co-opt your Turkey of the Year awards. Anyhow, welcome back and we (all eight of us) look forward to our weekly trip with Fleming.
--Steve

Many people, like Michael from Germany, wrote in to complain about omissions, particularly John Rocker: Turkey awards all in all O.K., but why did you leave out Rocker? Is it because he is such a FATBOI (Far Too Boring Obvious Idiot)?

Mike, please leave the dorky acronyms in the hands of trained professionals. Actually, Rocker's unfortunate interview happened in 1999.

Here's the best of the rest:

My vote for Turkey of the Year goes to all the former coaches, sportswriters, radio-talk-show monkeys, students at IU, former players, or any other Neanderthals that think Bob Knight [who ran away with our Pulse poll] should not have been kicked off campus!
--Jerry

I hope Santa remembers to drop a roll of duct tape in Gary Payton's stocking so Gary can seal his pie-hole with it. Great article! Happy Thanksgiving!
--Geoff

Terrell Owens' much-ballyhooed, ill-advised jaunt thru Texas Stadium was perhaps the singular most boneheaded act I've ever seen on any field of play.
--Jay

I think you were out of line to put, "the entire U.S. 4x100 relay team" on your list. Clearly you are out of touch with today's athletes. They just celebrated a little too much.
--Craig

My vote goes to Darryl Strawberry. Would someone please put this guy away for a few years?
--Diana

The Rice wives (Jerry and Glen). We know your multi-million dollar husbands get no respect. But we do not care what you think. Just go shopping and shut up.
--Doug

I nominate Bengals owner Mike Brown, he moved into a new stadium, but still won't hire a GM and still has one of the worst teams in the NFL.
-- Matt

I wouldn't mind Sterling Sharpe if he just wouldn't talk about himself so much.
--Todd

Yeah, don't you just hate media types like that? Well, Todd, I have forwarded your comments to the appropriate people. You can expect an email from Sterling's mother very soon.

David Fleming, a senior writer for The Magazine, shares his off-center perspective each Tuesday. E-mail flemfile@aol.com.
