The Life

Hold the Phone!
ESPN The Magazine

Technology knows no dog days. It is, however, full of dogs. Let the new and improved Pulse help you pick from the litter.

THE TOY
Sanyo SCP-5000 cell phone with Visual Caller ID (sprintpcs.com)
For $500, you can actually see who's calling (in color).
Use it: They love it in Portland. Steve Smith and Dale Davis have one. Rasheed wants one too.
Lose it: You can't afford it. And no, Derek Jeter (right) won't be calling.

THE GAME
NHL Hitz 20-02 (midway.com)
From the makers of NFL Blitz, natch. Due out this winter.
Use it: Pick some fights. Spill some blood. (Otherwise the interactive crowd gets bored and walks out of the arena.)
Lose it: Won't all those trades hold up the release?

THE EVENT
The Fifth Annual Webby Awards (webbyawards.com)
Okay, so everyone's out of business and the cappuccino machine is full of rust. Let's par-tay! The Webbys go online July 18 in San Francisco.
Use it: Bowl.com is up for the year's best sports site. It's, um, spare.
Lose it: Three of the five sports sites nominated back in Year 1 are already toes-up. The survivors: Skinet.com and ESPN.com. It's good to be alive.

This article appears in the July 23 issue of ESPN The Magazine.
