SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame (No. 24 ESPN/USA Today; No. 19 AP) suspended starting guard Kyle McAlarney indefinitely after he was arrested on a marijuana
possession charge.
McAlarney, who had been averaging 10.3 points a game, did not
play Saturday in Notre Dame's 95-66 victory over Stony
Brook.
"He made a grave mistake, he knows it, we've discussed it, he's
handled it like a man, he will take his medicine like a man,"
Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said after the game.
Brey said McAlarney would continue to practice with the Fighting
Irish (12-1), who have won 11 straight games.
"I do not know what the future holds," Brey said. "We are
preparing to go into Big East play where we're not going to have
him. That's how we have to prepare and how our team has to prepare.
If that changes in January some time, then we will go from there."
Brey said McAlarney would be on the bench beginning with
Wednesday's home game against Louisville.
A state trooper reported finding marijuana in McAlarney's car
during a traffic stop a few blocks from the Notre Dame campus early
Friday. The 19-year-old McAlarney was taken to St. Joseph County
Jail, where he was booked on the charge and later released on bond.
He could not be located for comment.
The arrest came hours after he scored 21 points, all on
3-pointers, in a 101-51 win against Rider.
McAlarney, a sophomore from Staten Island, N.Y., started the
first 12 games this season.
