BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A source close to the unsettled coaching situation at Indiana University told ESPN.com on Tuesday that the school is looking at three options for handling Kelvin Sampson's future at the school.
The first and "by far the most likely," according to the source, is that Sampson will be suspended this week for the purpose of future termination. He would have 10 days to appeal.
The second is that the school and Sampson will reach an agreement in which the coach would accept a settlement and resign this week.
The third is that the school will not take action against Sampson yet and might extend its ongoing investigation past the stated one-week period. That is a long shot, the source said.
Indiana, with Sampson on the bench Tuesday night, snapped No. 15 Purdue's 11-game winning streak 77-68 to improve to 22-4 and 11-2 in the Big Ten. The No. 14 Hoosiers next play Saturday at Northwestern.
After the game, Sampson wouldn't discuss his status.
"I think the way our team is playing answers all the questions," he said. "I think our play speaks for itself."
A school investigation last year revealed Sampson and his assistants made more than 100 impermissible calls. That occurred while Sampson was on NCAA probation for making 577 improper phone calls between 2000 and 2004 while coaching Oklahoma.
An NCAA report Feb. 13 accused Sampson of providing false and misleading information to university and NCAA investigators, failing to promote a high standard of honesty in the program and not promoting an atmosphere of compliance.
Sampson said then that he never intentionally provided false or misleading information to NCAA investigators.
