Tubby Smith's nephew slain in Massachusetts

WORCESTER, Mass. -- A nephew of Minnesota basketball coach Tubby Smith was stabbed to death during a fight at an off-campus apartment.

Police say 19-year-old William L. Smith, a Becker College student who lived in Scotland, Md., was killed early Sunday.

"We lost a special young man last night," Tubby Smith said in a statement released by the school. "The grieving process will take some time for my brother and his family, but I know that they appreciate and will need all the support."

William Smith was stabbed once in the chest after a fight involving students and nonstudents broke out during a house party and spilled into the street, Detective Captain Edward McGinn said.

McGinn says a weapon was recovered at the scene. No arrests have been made, but police say they interviewed numerous witnesses and were pursuing several leads.

An autopsy was scheduled for Monday.

Tubby Smith was traveling Monday. He is in his second season with the Gophers after spending 10 years at Kentucky.
