Former Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie entered a rehabilitation program in Houston following his arrest on a drunken-driving charge last month.
Gillispie checked himself into the John Lucas Athletes After Care Program for alcohol-related counseling last Thursday, FOX 26 Sports in Houston reported.
Gillispie was arrested on Aug. 27 following an early-morning traffic stop in Anderson County, about 30 minutes west of Lexington. He has pleaded not guilty. The court date is scheduled for Sept. 23 but that Gillispie will not be required to appear.
Gillispie was fired in March after going 40-27 in two seasons with the Wildcats.
"I'm not very proud of what happened in Kentucky two weeks ago," Gillispie told Fox 26 Sports. "That's inexcusable at this stage of my life. It should have never happened.
"I think one of the things I've always been is honest and truthful. I've never been afraid to accept responsibility. I am accepting responsibility by going to spend some time with John Lucas in Houston. He's got the John Lucas Athletes After Care Program. He's going to deal with some alcohol issues for me.
"Number one, I'm going to try help myself and number two, I'm going to try to get back into a situation where I can do what I love the most and what I miss the most and that's coach college basketball."
Gillispie was fired in March after going 40-27 in two seasons with the Wildcats.
