Pointers win third title in seven years

SALEM, Va. -- Down 10 minutes with 11 to play, Wisconsin-Stevens Point looked as if it was going to fall short of a third Division III title in seven years.

Then Jared Jenkins led the Pointers on a run that put them ahead comfortably ahead with five minutes to go.

Jenkins finished with 17 points and Matt Moses scored 22 for Stevens Point to help the Pointers (29-4) to a 78-73 win over Williams College on Saturday.

"When you're down 10 like that, it's easy to panic," Wisconsin-Stevens Point coach Bob Semling said. "We stayed the course and kept our poise. We did not get out of character. We started getting some stops and grinding on offense."

Jenkins capped the run with a 3-pointer and a three-point play. The latter came with 5:02 and put the Pointers up 66-59. Jenkins scored nine points in the run and teammate Dan Tillema had eight of his 15 points during it.

Williams (30-2), which had won its last 21 games, made it 69-67, on a three-point play by James Wang with 1:15 remaining and trailed by three points, 76-73, following a 3-pointer by Kyle Schultz with eight seconds left.

Moses broke free for a driving layup with 3 seconds left to give Stevens Point another title to go with back-to-back wins in 2004 and 2005.

"This is one of the best feelings in the world that you can possibly get," Jenkins said. "This is saying that you're the best in all of D-III basketball. There's not much better. It's like winning the Super Bowl -- our Super Bowl. It's an amazing feeling."

Jenkins hit 6 of 9 from the floor and all three of his 3-point attempts. Moses hit 8 of 15 and made all six of his free-throw attempts.

Schultz led Williams with 20 points and six rebounds. Troy Whittington added 19 points and 11 rebounds.

"It's not so much what they did. It's probably more what we didn't do," Williams coach Mike Maker said of the run. "I should have subbed more. I think we got a little tired and that made us a little careless offensively and not as solid defensively. But you go with the ones who got you here."
