University of Miami officials have confirmed that head coach Frank Haith has resigned to fill the vacant coaching position at Missouri.
Missouri officials, however, have not yet confirmed the hiring of Haith to replace Mike Anderson.
Haith and Missouri athletic director Mike Alden met in Houston on Saturday, just days after Alden was turned down by Purdue coach Matt Painter.
Haith and Alden have discussed a multiyear contract in the six-year range. Missouri officials are scheduled to meet late Monday night to confirm terms of the contract.
Haith will fly to Miami to talk to his team Monday and then to Columbia, Mo., to be formally introduced.
Haith has two years left on his contract with Miami, worth a total of about $3 million. He has gone 129-101 in seven seasons with the Hurricanes.
"Frank Haith has been a steady leader and made a positive impact on the University of Miami men's basketball program," said Tony Hernandez, Miami's acting athletic director. "We want to wish him well at Missouri, and will begin a national search for a new head coach immediately."
Missouri has been searching for a replacement for Anderson,
who left the Tigers late last month to take over at Arkansas.
Missouri tried unsuccessfully to lure away Painter,
who wound up staying with the Boilermakers and accepting an
eight-year extension.
The Tigers have made three straight NCAA tournaments, and their 77 wins over the past three seasons is the best such total in school history.
Some Miami players reacted on Twitter when the news broke. Center Reggie Johnson simply said "WOW," and forward Julian Gamble vowed that the Hurricanes are going to "get better regardless."
Haith, whose job security at Miami has been a hot topic in recent years, has plenty of experience in the Big 12. He was an assistant at Texas A&M from 1992 to '95, then returned to the Aggies as an associate head coach for the 1996-97 season. After leaving there for Wake Forest, Haith spent three years on Rick Barnes' staff at Texas before getting the Miami job in 2004.
