ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- Vincent Grier scored 24 points to help
Minnesota beat Furman 84-69 on Wednesday night in the quarterfinals
of the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout.

Grier also had five assists and six rebounds for the Golden
Gophers (2-0), who bolted to a 9-0 lead and never trailed.

Rico Tucker's 3-pointer with 3:33 remaining finished a 10-2
Minnesota run and gave the Gophers their biggest lead of the first
half, 34-21.

Furman (1-2) closed to 41-33 at the half.

But after a basket by Moussa Diagne at the start of the second
half, Grier scored five points in a 14-2 run to give the Gophers a
55-37 lead.

A free throw by Quan Prowell closed the gap to 70-61 with just
under 3 minutes remaining, but the Paladins could get no closer.

Minnesota made 14 straight free throws, including eight by
Grier, in the last 5 minutes.

Tucker and J'son Stamper each scored 11 points for the Gophers.

Diagne led the Paladins with 21. Prowell added 14 points and
nine rebounds.

Minnesota will face No. 19 Alabama on Friday in the semifinals.
