SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) -- Terrence Roberts hit a 3-pointer from the
top of the key at the buzzer in overtime to give Syracuse an 86-84
victory over Rutgers on Wednesday night, snapping the Orange's
four-game losing streak.
It was only Roberts' fifth 3-point attempt of the season and
ruined a banner night for a guy who thrives from long range. Quincy
Douby, the Big East's leading scorer, had career highs of 41 points
and nine 3-pointers for Rutgers.
Syracuse (16-6, 4-4 Big East) was 4-4 in January, finishing the
month with four straight losses, and February didn't seem to be
starting out too well when Anthony Farmer hit a 3-pointer from the
top of the key to give the Scarlet Knights (13-8, 3-5) an 84-83
lead with just 7.8 seconds left in the extra period.
The Orange played the second half without senior guard Gerry
McNamara, the team's leading scorer at 16.9 points per game.
McNamara, who scored just two points, sat on the bench nursing an
injured right thigh he hurt in the first half, and his absence
nearly cost the Orange the game.
Josh Wright, who replaced McNamara, was called for a 10-second
violation with the Orange leading 80-79, but after Frank Russell
hit a hook in the lane to give Rutgers the lead back, Wright atoned
with a 3-pointer that rolled around the rim before going in to give
the Orange an 83-81 lead with 63 seconds left.
Roberts finished with 16 points and nine rebounds, Demetris
Nichols had 24 points and nine rebounds, Eric Devendorf had 21
points, and Wright finished with 14.
Webb forced the overtime when he hit a 3 from the right corner
off a feed from Douby in the final second of regulation after
Nichols had hit two free throws to give the Orange a 74-71 lead.
