Burrell, Xavier stave off game effort from Sumpter, Nova

CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP) -- Stanley Burrell scored 26 points to lead Xavier to a 71-66 victory over Villanova in the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam on Sunday.

Justin Doellman added nine points and eight rebounds to help Xavier (3-0) get the win in a game that had 13 lead changes and eight ties.

Curtis Sumpter and Shane Clark had 17 points apiece for Villanova (2-1).

Down 66-68 with 15 seconds left, Sumpter's 15-foot jumper was tipped and Dante Cunningham was fouled grabbing one of his eight rebounds. Cunningham made one of two foul shots.

Villanova's Mike Nardi then missed a 3-pointer and fouled Burrell, who made both foul shots to put the game out of reach with .9 seconds left.
