COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- James Gist scored a career-high 27 points, including two free throws that put Maryland ahead for good in overtime, and the Terrapins survived a scare from Northeastern in a 74-72 victory Thursday night.
Gist's foul shots put Maryland up 70-69 with 50 seconds left. After a Northeastern turnover, Eric Hayes made two free throws for the Terrapins, whose final six points came at the line.
Bambale Osby had 16 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks for Maryland (3-0). He was 14-for-20 at the line and 1-9 from the field.
After Northeastern closed to 60-58 with 28.7 seconds remaining in regulation, Landon Milbourne made one of two free throws for Maryland. Adako then nailed a 3-pointer from the corner with 9 seconds left, forcing overtime with his first career attempt from beyond the arc in 28 starts.
Northeastern trailed 38-32 early in the second half before taking the lead with a 14-2 run.
First, a 3-pointer by Janning and a dunk by Ojougboh got the Huskies within a point for the first time since it was 5-4. Minutes later, two straight steals produced baskets by Janning and Chaisson Allen, giving Northeastern its first lead, 41-40.
Following a Maryland timeout, Eugene Spates nailed a 3-pointer and Adako scored in the lane to expand the margin to 6 points.
Hayes halted the surge with a 3-pointer, the start of a 12-6 run that included five free throws by Osby. But Northeastern refused to wilt.
Gist scored 14 points and Greivis Vasquez had six assists to help Maryland take a 28-22 halftime lead.
The Terrapins shot only 11-for-20 at the free throw line, but that was offset by Northeastern's 9-for-34 shooting from the field, including 2 of 14 from beyond the arc.
Gist made his first four shots and scored Maryland's opening 11 points, helping the Terrapins take a 12-6 lead. The Huskies got within a basket three times before Gist sank two free throws and Milbourne added a layup to begin a 9-2 spurt that made it 28-19.
