Washington St. jumps on Oregon in Pac-10 opener

LOS ANGELES -- Aron Baynes scored 14 of his 20 points in the first half, and Washington State never trailed in beating Oregon 62-40 on Wednesday night in a first-round game of the Pac-10 tournament.

Baynes, a 6-foot-10, 250-pound senior from Australia, shot 7-of-8 from the field, 6-of-6 from the foul line and grabbed eight rebounds before leaving the game for good with 5:57 remaining and the Cougars leading 56-37.

The win was the fourth in the last five games for Washington State (17-14), which faces No. 15 UCLA (24-7) Thursday night in the quarterfinals. The teams split their two games this season, with the second-seeded Bruins winning 61-59 in January and the seventh-seeded Cougars prevailing 82-81 last month.

Tajuan Porter scored 20 points for 10th-seeded Oregon (8-23), which set Pac-10 tournament records for the lowest point total, lowest number of field goals (13) and lowest field goal percentage (26 percent).
