RICHMOND, Va. -- Joey Rodriguez scored 25 points as Virginia Commonwealth won its ninth consecutive game, beating North Carolina-Wilmington 79-70 Saturday night.
Rodriguez made two 3-pointers, and Ed Nixon and Bradford Burgess each hit one as the Rams (18-5, 10-1 Colonial Athletic Association) built a 15-5 lead less than 5 minutes into the game. They led by at least six the rest of the first half, which ended with the Rams ahead 42-31.
The Rams widened their lead to 17 points, 67-50, with 8:27 to go before the Seahawks (10-12, 4-7) began to whittle it down. After making 10 of 20 first-half shots from 3-point range, VCU was 1 of 9 outside the arc in the second.
Bradford finished with 17 points and Nixon 16 for the Rams, who have won 22 straight at home.
