Colorado State edges Boise State 97-93 in 2OT
Boise State hits a late shot in overtime, which looked as if it should have counted. The referees reviewed it, even using a stopwatch, and overruled the call. Boise State lost to Colorado State in double overtime. (1:26)
FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- John Gillon scored 19 points, including six in the second overtime, and Colorado State beat Boise State 97-93 on Wednesday night in a game that ended in controversy.
At the end of the first overtime, Boise State's James Webb III banked in a 3-pointer as time expired, which would have given the Broncos the win. But after hand-timing the review, officials determined that the shot was not released before the buzzer.
Boise State inbounded the ball to Webb with 0.8 seconds left.
In the second overtime, Colorado State started with all of the momentum and opened on a 9-0 run before holding off a late rally. Gillon made a jumper, a layup and a pair of free throws and Fred Richardson III hit a 3-pointer to help the Rams (14-10, 6-5 Mountain West Conference) to a 95-87 lead with 1:09 to play. Anthony Drmic drained a pair of 3s to bring the Broncos (16-9, 7-5) to within three, 96-93, with 22 seconds remaining but Boise State could not get any closer.
The Mountain West Conference posted a statement on its website.
After the video review, "we noticed that the game clock was not started upon touch," the statement read. "We then used a stopwatch overlay from the monitor review system to determine when he touched it and then figure out how many tenths of a second it took from the time he touched the ball until the time he released the ball and whether he was able to get that shot off in that 0.8 seconds. .... It was not taken in that 0.8-second time frame, but actually closer to 1.2 or 1.3 time frame. As a result, the basket does not count."
Antwan Scott also scored 19 points for the Rams, who had a 49-34 rebounding edge over Boise State. Prentiss Nixon had 15 points, Emmanuel Omogbo had 13 points and Tiel Daniels had 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Montigo Alford scored 25 points for the Broncos, who hit a school-record 18 3-pointers. Mikey Thompson added 20 and Drmic 17.
Webb nailed a jumper to tie it at 74-all with 30 seconds to go in regulation and Daniels' shot came up just short for Colorado State.
