Wisconsin AD hired Greg Gard over former NBA players

MADISON, Wis. -- Badgers athletic director Barry Alvarez passed over two applicants with extensive NBA experience in making interim basketball coach Greg Gard the permanent replacement for former coach Bo Ryan.

A review of application materials obtained through an open records request shows that Lindsey Hunter Jr., a former assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors who played professionally with five NBA teams applied. So did Henry Bibby, who played with four NBA teams and was an assistant coach with the Philadelphia 76ers and Detroit Pistons.

Alvarez can choose whomever he desires from the applicant pool.

Gard took over as interim coach in December after Ryan abruptly retired and was hired permanently earlier this week.

Wisconsin is 13-7 under Gard. The Badgers lost to Nebraska in the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday.
