Virginia suspends Austin Nichols for season opener due to violation of team rules

Virginia has suspended Memphis transfer Austin Nichols for two preseason scrimmages and the season opener against UNC Greensboro.

The team announced that Nichols, who sat out last season after transferring, was suspended due to a violation of team rules.

The 6-foot-9 Nichols averaged 13.3 points and 6.1 rebounds as a sophomore at Memphis in 2014-15. After he serves his suspension, Nichols will become eligible to start Nov. 15 against St. Francis-Brooklyn.

The Cavaliers return three starters, with the addition of Nichols, and will hope to repeat their success from last season, when they went 29-8 and 13-5 in the ACC. Virginia is expected to be a top-10 preseason team.
