Rodney Purvis cleared to play

North Carolina State freshman guard Rodney Purvis has been cleared by the NCAA to play this season, Wolfpack coach Mark Gottfried told ESPN.com's Andy Katz.

Purvis' academic eligibility was uncertain while his high school transcript was being reviewed. But the NCAA Eligibility Center cleared the former McDonald's All-American on Monday.

The 6-foot-3 Purvis missed North Carolina State's exhibition trip to Spain last month while his eligibility was in question. The school said at the time that the NCAA was giving an "extended review" to Purvis' high school, the Upper Room in Raleigh.

Purvis also was The Associated Press men's prep basketball player of the year for North Carolina.
