EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State junior point guard Keith Appling, who injured his left knee and right shoulder in separate injuries this weekend, should be "fine," Spartans coach Tom Izzo said Monday.
Third-seeded Michigan State plays No. 2 Duke in the Midwest Region semifinals in Indianapolis on Friday around 9:45 p.m. ET.
Appling practiced Monday with his banged-up right shoulder in a protective wrap after taking a pad off his left knee. Appling hopes he doesn't have to play with any protection against the Blue Devils.
Appling said Friday he "tweaked" the patellar tendon in his left knee during Michigan State's 65-54 win in the second round over Valparaiso and then aggravated a previous shoulder injury in the Spartans' 70-48 win in the third round over Memphis on Saturday.
"I think he'll be a little bit sore and we'll keep him out of some drills this week that are more physical," Izzo said. "But I am anxious today to see whether it bothers him shooting, because it is his right arm. That's the only thing that's left, but he shot free throws on that yesterday and didn't seem to have any problems."
Appling, who has started every game this season for Michigan State, leads the Spartans in scoring with 13.3 points a game and assists with 3.4 a game.
