Ryan Braun has a strain near the middle of his back, Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. He initially hurt himself in the regular-season finale and aggravated it today. "I don't know what tomorrow will bring," Counsell said. "You can call it day-to-day. I think everybody is at this point."

The Dodgers win Game 1, 4-2, and can advance with Clayton Kershaw on the mound tomorrow night. Mookie Betts and Corey Seager stepped up, and Blake Treinen and Kenley Jansen provided the last six outs, but Julio Urias might have been the biggest reason they won this game.

Alden Gonzalez ESPN Staff Writer

That might be it for Julio Urias. He gave the Dodgers three scoreless innings and can now hand it off to the back end of their bullpen. Precisely what they needed out of him, and it might set him up to pitch in Game 3 if they need it.

The Dodgers have had two baserunners since the second inning. The seventh inning, which will begin with the top of their lineup, might be an important one for them. Craig Counsell could turn to Josh Hader thereafter.

Orlando Arcia, baseball's second-worst player by fWAR last year, sent a 98-mph fastball that caught too much of the plate out to left-center, cutting the Brewers' deficit to one. Julio Urias is warming up.

Alden Gonzalez ESPN Staff Writer

Craig Counsell will need at least 16 outs from his bullpen tonight. And the way this is going, I gotta think he'll consider saving Josh Hader for tomorrow.

Brent Suter has walked three of the first five batters he has faced and has thrown only 6 of his first 23 pitches for strikes. A nightmare scenario for the Brewers.

Brewers rookie righty Williams out for wild card

Brewers rookie right-hander Devin Williams has been left off the team's roster for its wild-card series against the Dodgers due to soreness in his throwing shoulder. Starter Brett Anderson is also not on the roster because of a recurring blister.

Alden Gonzalez ESPN Staff Writer

Devin Williams has soreness in his right shoulder and is not on the Brewers' wild-card roster. A major, major blow to their chances.

Alden Gonzalez ESPN Staff Writer

The gap between the Dodgers and Brewers is enormous, of course, but not insurmountable in a best-of-three. To advance, I think Milwaukee needs two things: for Devin Williams and Josh Hader to get stretched; and for least two of these three to revert to who they are: Christian Yelich, Keston Hiura and Corey Knebel.

Brewers turn to Suter for Game 1 vs. Dodgers

The Brewers, still scrambling after the sudden loss of ace Corbin Burnes to an oblique strain, will start left-hander Brent Suter in Game 1 of the team's wild-card series against the Dodgers on Wednesday night.

Alden Gonzalez ESPN Staff Writer

LH Brent Suter will start for the Brewers in Game 1. Craig Counsell didn't specify how long he will go, but his season high is 59 pitches. The Brewers had Corbin Burnes lined up for this game way back in early September, then he suffered an oblique injury. "We're on Plan B," Counsell said, "but it's a good Plan B."

Obviously the Brewers' best chance to beat the Dodgers is for Josh Hader and Devin Williams to absorb as many innings as possible. But between them, they've combined to pitch in back-to-back days 5 times and never once 3 in a row. Their high in innings was 2, done 4 times by Williams. Their high in pitch count: 35, by Hader. The Brewers may have been a little more conservative with their best relievers this season, like most teams. Maybe they're fresh now.
