GAME LOG
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Wally World is in business again for the
Angels.
| | | Troy Glaus covered a lot of ground circling the bases after his two home runs. |
Wally Joyner made his first start for the Angels since 1991 with a homer and an RBI single as Anaheim beat the Texas Rangers 10-3 on Thursday night to avoid a season-opening sweep.
"It was a lot of fun. I just had to wait a couple of days," said Joyner, whose only appearance in the first two games was as a pinch-hitter.
"I'm enjoying playing the game, being healthy enough to play and
healthy enough to be productive," Joyner said.
Joyner, 38, began his major league career with the Angels from
1985-91, and returned this spring as a non-roster invitee to spring
training. For now, he is expected to start mostly against right-handers.
"I'm enjoying every minute of it," he said.
Troy Glaus homered twice and Ramon Ortiz (1-0) struck out 10, becoming the first Anaheim pitcher to reach double digits since Chuck Finley fanned 12 at Detroit on Aug. 15, 1999. Ortiz allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings.
Glaus' first homer tied the score pulled the Angels to 2-1 in the fourth against Ryan Glynn (0-1). Two batters later, Joyner homered to tie the score.
Joyner put the Angels ahead 3-2 with an RBI single in the sixth, starting a four-run inning.
"He's just a professional hitter and works very hard at hitting," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "You see his bat speed looks good. He had a couple of real good at-bats there. Hopefully, we'll see him hit stride."
Alex Rodriguez was 0-for-4, flying out twice and reaching on a fielder's choice and an error. It was the first hitless game this year for Rodriguez, 4-for-16 with no RBI this season after signing a record $252 million, 10-year contract.
The Rangers begin a three-game series Friday against the Seattle Mariners, Rodriguez's team the past seven seasons.
Meanwhile, Glynn gave up five runs and eight hits in 5 1/3
innings.
Right after Joyner's RBI single in the sixth, Glenallen Hill's liner struck Glynn on the top, backside of his right shoulder as he was completing his followthrough. The ball bounded into right-center field.
Glynn was on the ground, then got up and walked around briefly before being pulled out of the game for X-rays that were negative. Rangers officials said it was a bruise and listed Glynn as day to day.
"For a second it was scary. It didn't really hurt, I didn't feel it because my adrenaline was flowing so much," Glynn said. "I laid there because of the initial pain. When I realized it was time to get up I got up."
Glynn said he was confident he would be able to make his next scheduled start Wednesday at Anaheim.
After Glynn left the game, Jorge Fabregas hit the first pitch by reliever Jeff Brantley for a three-run homer that made it 6-2. Glaus hit his second homer off Brantley an inning later.
Chad Curtis' two-run homer put the Rangers ahead in the second. They didn't score again until Randy Velarde's solo shot in the
eighth.
Orlando Palmeiro had an RBI single in the ninth RBI single and Garret Anderson a two-run
double in the ninth off Jonathan
Johnson.
Game notes Anaheim avoided only the third 0-3 start in franchise
history. The only times the Angels lost their first three games
came in 1976 and 1992. ... The last time Texas swept a three-game
series against Anaheim at The Ballpark in Arlington was June 5-7,
1991. ... Joyner has 202 career homers, 115 with the Angels.
