GAME LOG
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Making contact proved to make all the
difference for Benji Gil.
| | | Garret Anderson slides safely past Ramon Hernandez to score one of his two runs on the day. |
Gil had a career-high four hits and drove in two runs as the
Anaheim Angels defeated the Oakland Athletics 6-4 Sunday.
"It goes to show you that if you keep the barrel of the bat in
the strike zone, and put the ball in play, sometimes you find a
hole," Gil said. "I was able to put the bat on the ball."
Gil was 2-for-12 with four strikeouts in his previous 12 at
bats.
"Today he was spectacular," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.
"He's a guy we know can be productive, especially against
left-handed pitching. That's a big game for him."
Scott Schoeneweis (1-1) pitched six strong innings as the Angels
won two of three from the defending AL West champions. Schoeneweis
allowed three runs, three hits, and six walks.
"It wasn't pretty," Schoeneweis said. "I don't usually walk a
lot of people, but that's a patient team over there."
Barry Zito (1-1), who made his major league debut against the
Angels last July 22, faltered after striking out five of the first
seven batters he faced. He allowed consecutive hits to the bottom
of the order and was never effective afterward.
He allowed a career-high six earned runs and nine hits in 5 1/3
innings, with one walk and seven strikeouts.
The bottom third of Anaheim's lineup combined to go 6-for-8
against Zito, who had beaten the Angels in two previous starts.
"I was making the same pitches, but they were getting balls
that had eyes," Zito said. "I kept throwing the fastball in and
they kept hitting it."
Schoeneweis struggled with his control throughout the game, but
managed to stay out of trouble with the help of two double plays, a
caught stealing and a heart-stopping relief effort from Shigetoshi
Hasegawa.
Hasegawa replaced Schoeneweis, who walked the first two hitters
in the seventh, and walked the bases loaded. After striking out
Ramon Hernandez, Hasegawa walked Johnny Damon to force in a run,
but then induced Jose Ortiz to ground into an inning-ending double
play.
Troy Percival pitched the ninth for his second save.
The Angels broke the game open in the sixth with four runs
against Zito. Troy Glaus walked and Garrett Anderson singled to
spark the rally. One out later, Zito gave up an RBI single to
Bengie Molina and a run-scoring double to Shawn Wooten.
"When you get a good pitcher on the ropes, you have to keep
pounding on him," Anderson said. "Those were bloop hits, but they
counted."
T.J. Mathews replaced Zito, and allowed Gil's two-run double.
Molina's RBI double in the fourth inning put Anaheim up 2-1.
Tejada added his second home run of the season, a solo shot off
Schoeneweis, in the sixth. Pinch-hitter Mario Valdez had an RBI
single in the eighth for the A's.
"We kept coming up dry," A's manager Art Howe said. "We're
going to have to jumpstart this offense some way."
Game notes Angels pitcher Ben Weber changed his uniform number to 77
from 57. ... RHP Cory Lidle will make his Oakland debut on Friday
against Texas. He was scheduled to pitch Wednesday. Lidle started
the season in Triple-A Sacramento. ... Glenallen Hill went 0-for-5
with three strikeouts and remains one hit short of 1,000 hits for
his career. ... A's INF Frank Menechino is the only player from the
opening day roster who has not appeared in a game this season. ...
Angels OF Darrin Erstad left in the seventh inning with tightness
in his right rib cage. ... The bottom third of the Angels lineup
went 15-for-32 (.469) in the series.
