MILWAUKEE (AP) Tyler Houston had the game's biggest hit and
understatement.
| | | Tyler Houston's third-inning grand slam is one of five homers hit by the Brewers. |
"It was a good day to hit one halfway decent in the air,"
Houston said Thursday after his grand slam led the Milwaukee
Brewers over the New York Mets 12-8 and completed a three-game
sweep.
With the roof at Miller Park open for only the second time in 12
games and a brisk wind blowing to right field, nine home runs were
hit, five by the Brewers.
Angel Echevarria homered twice for Milwaukee, including one
after Houston's slam in a seven-run third inning that made it 9-1.
Jose Hernandez and Devon White also connected for Milwaukee
(11-10), which moved above .500 for the first time since April 15
last year.
Houston's slam was the first of his career.
"The at-bat before I had a 2-0 fastball, and I was upset that I
didn't swing," he said. "I didn't want to miss another one."
Mike Piazza homered twice for the NL champion Mets, who at 8-13
dropped into a last-place tie with Florida in the NL East.
Edgardo Alfonzo homered for the fourth consecutive game, and
Desi Relaford also homered for the Mets, who came into the game
last in the NL in batting average, runs scored and seven other
offensive categories.
Brewers starter Paul Rigdon was hit in the face in the fourth by
Rey Ordonez's one-out smash and left the game, bleeding profusely
from a cut above his upper lip that required 20 stitches.
He was taken to a hospital and X-rays showed no fractures. It
was not known whether he would miss his next scheduled start, at
Atlanta next Tuesday.
Milwaukee, which got a season-high 19 hits, was just 5-20
against the Mets in three-plus seasons of NL play, before sweeping
the series by scoring 31 runs. Chad Fox (1-0) won in relief.
"I just feel good with the way we're playing and swinging the
bats," Milwaukee manager Davey Lopes said. "I pretty much feel
like we're doing what we're capable of doing."
Brett Hinchliffe (0-1), making his fifth major league start and
first in the National League, allowed eight runs and nine hits in
two-plus innings.
"I brought a `B' game to an `A' table," said Hinchliffe, who
allowed nine hits and eight runs in two-plus innings. "The way
they've been swinging the bats, they don't miss many mistakes, and
I made too many mistakes."
Geoff Jenkins hit an RBI single in the first, but Ordonez tied
it with a bunt single in the second. White's RBI double put the
Brewers ahead for good in the bottom half, and Milwaukee broke open
the game in the third.
Jenkins got his 11th hit in a span of 13 at-bats, Jeromy Burnitz
walked and Hernandez reached on a single off the glove of Relaford
at third.
Houston homered for a 6-1 lead, Echevarria homered, White had an
RBI single off Tom Martin and Piazza made a throwing error during a
steal attempt that led to a run.
Benny Agbayani hit a two-run single in the fourth, but
Hernandez's homer made it 10-3 in the bottom half.
Piazza had a solo homer and Relaford a two-run drive in the
fifth, and Piazza's second solo homer cut the deficit to 10-7 in
the seventh, giving him his 25th multihomer game. With runners on
first and second, Ordonez hit into an inning-ending double play
against Fox.
White homered in the seventh off Turk Wendell and Echevarria
homered in the eighth off John Franco.
Alfonzo homered off Curtis Leskanic in the ninth.
Game notes The Brewers beat Cincinnati 8-4 on April 8 in the other
game played with the roof open. ... Piazza got his first homers
since April 9 and raised his season total to six. ... Relaford went
4-for-4, raising his average from .154 to .353. ... Echevarria has
his second multihomer game. ... Milwaukee's seven-run inning was a
season high.
