TORONTO (AP) -- Kip Wells stopped the slide for the Chicago White
Sox.

Wells pitched six strong innings as Chicago stopped an
eight-game losing streak by beating the Toronto Blue Jays 3-1
Thursday night.
"We hadn't won a game on this road trip, and it was a snowball
effect," Wells said. "When there is an opportunity to win you
have to seize the moment."
Ray Durham and Jeff Liefer each went 3-for-4 for the White Sox,
who avoided what would have been their longest losing streak since
1978. Chicago is 1-8 on a 12-game trip.
"We obviously needed a win, probably worse than anybody in
baseball," Chicago manager Jerry Manuel said. "It got to the
point where I felt, 'Here we go again.' The thought would cross
mind by mind, but I didn't dwell on it."
Wells (1-1) scattered five hits, while striking out four and
walking one.
"He had the whole package tonight," Manuel said. "He attacked
the strike zone, and executed all his pitches."
Keith Foulke pitched a perfect ninth for his eighth save in nine
chances.
Chicago finishes its trip with a three-game series in Detroit.
"I don't feel comfortable with one win," Chicago's Jose
Valentin said. "Hopefully, we sweep Detroit and we get back home
having won four in a row. We can't afford to lose anymore series."
Toronto starter Chris Carpenter (4-2) allowed three runs -- one
earned -- and 10 hits in eight innings.
"Carpenter pitched good," Toronto's Carlos Delgado said. "If
you expect us to win every game that we come out and play good,
then we're going to win 150 games."
Delgado went 0-for-4, and the first baseman's throwing error in
the third allowed a run to score. Delgado went 1-for-13 in the
three-game series.
Shannon Stewart led off the first with a double, and Alex
Gonzalez singled before Delgado hit into a double play, scoring
Stewart.
After Chris Singleton singled in the third, Durham hit an RBI
double to right. Right fielder Raul Mondesi threw to Delgado, whose throw to catcher Darrin Fletcher ticked off Fletcher's glove
and into the dugout, allowing Durham to score on Delgado's error.
"I just threw it away," Delgado said.
Carpenter loaded the bases in the sixth with a walk, a single
and a hit batter before Liefer singled for a 3-1 lead.
Game notes Blue Jays manager Buck Martinez left the team for three
games to attend the funeral of his mother-in-law. Bench coach
Cookie Rojas became the interim manager starting with Thursday
night's game. ... The White Sox improved to 6-17 on the road. Last
season, Chicago led the majors with a 49-32 road mark. ... Liefer
hit a ball off the right-field wall in the fourth, but Mondesi
threw him out at second.
