Despite poor pregame, Buehrle comes on strong
RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

DETROIT (AP) -- As he warmed up for his start Saturday against the Detroit Tigers, Chicago White Sox lefty Mark Buehrle thought he was in big trouble.

"I really didn't feel good out there at all," he said. "I couldn't hit any spots and I didn't have my stuff."

Buehrle then went out and pitched a three-hitter for his first major league shutout, leading the White Sox to an 8-0 victory.

"He's a legitimate big-league pitcher, and he showed that again tonight against a really good-hitting club," Chicago manager Jerry Manuel said. "He had it all today. He got a lot of popups and lazy fly balls and that's exactly what you need in this park."

Chris Singleton had four hits and scored three runs, and Ray Durham homered. The White Sox won their third in a row after an eight-game losing streak.

"We feel a lot better than we did a couple days ago," Singleton said. "We're feeling like a team again, instead of a bunch of unconnected parts. That start really toughened us up."

The Tigers dropped their fourth in a row and were shut out for the first time all season.

"I don't know if that was us, or if (Buehrle) was really that good," Tigers manager Phil Garner said. "He didn't look like his stuff was that good, but maybe his location was. I'll have to watch the tapes."

Buehrle (2-3) won for the first time since winning in Detroit April 18, a stretch of five starts. He walked one and struck out six in his first complete game in 12 major league starts.

"I don't think this place has anything to do with me winning," he said. "It has just worked out that I have been throwing the ball well both times that I have been here."

Dave Mlicki (3-5) lost his third decision in a row, allowing five runs on nine hits and two walks in six-plus innings. He has an 11.30 ERA in his last three starts, which were against three of the American League's weaker teams -- Tampa Bay, Baltimore and Chicago.

"I really wanted to give us a lift, and I didn't do my job," he said. "When I have problems, I try to do too much and it really hurts me."

The White Sox started quickly, scoring twice off Mlicki in the first. Jose Valentin led off the game with a double, then scored when third baseman Shane Halter threw away Singleton's bunt.

Magglio Ordonez lined a one-out single to left, and Singleton slid around Brandon Inge's tag to score.

Chicago added a run in the fourth when Paul Konerko and Herbert Perry walked and Sandy Alomar singled. The hit ended Alomar's 0-for-16 slump.

Durham made it 5-0 in the fifth, lining his seventh homer of the season into the right-field bullpen.

"That was pretty much the nail in my coffin," Mlicki said. "I threw him a horrible pitch and he killed it."

Chicago could have had more runs if not for two spectacular plays by Wendell Magee in left field. He crashed into the wall to take an extra-base hit away from Alomar in the second, then made a diving catch to rob Durham in the seventh.

"You can't practice plays like that, it is just do-or-die," he said. "I love being able to do things like that and help out my pitcher."

Chicago added three more runs in the ninth, sparked by Valentin's run-scoring double.

Game notes
