DETROIT -- Boston Red Sox outfielder Manny Ramirez will not play in the All-Star game next week due to a sore left hamstring. Ramirez, who was the designated hitter Saturday night against the Detroit Tigers, has been playing despite the injury. "It's disappointing not to go to the All-Star game, but this is for the best," Ramirez said in a statement before Saturday's game. "My priority is to try to help the Red Sox, and I need to take care of this injury so it does not become something that will bother me for the rest of the season."
Ramirez was voted in by fans as an American League starter for the fifth year in a row. He has been named to the All-Star team seven times in all, including six starts.
Chicago White Sox right fielder Magglio Ordonez was named as Ramirez's replacement.
Entering the second game of Saturday's day-night doubleheader with Cleveland, Ordonez was batting .298 with 16 homers and 50 RBIs. This will be his fourth All-Star game. |
