Fallout lingers from Dusty-Giants split

By Joe Morgan
Special to ESPN.com

Cubs skipper Dusty Baker is in the midst of his first visit to San Francisco's Pac Bell Park since he managed the Giants in the World Series last October. The Cubs defeated the Giants 4-2 Tuesday night in the first game of a three-game series between two division leaders.

Baker, who won three manager of the year awards in his 10 years with the Giants, was unceremoniously let go by the Giants after the World Series -- and some animosity remains on both sides.

Baker reportedly is still upset with the Giants over how his IRS problems (for back taxes) came to light.

While he was negotiating with the Cubs, information about Baker's IRS issue was leaked. The Giants organization has denied it leaked this information, but Dusty reportedly says he's not convinced.

Time heals all wounds, so eventually both sides will move on. But it's still too soon and too close for the slate to be wiped clean.

The Giants deserve credit, though, for bringing in manager Felipe Alou. He was the perfect fit. I don't think there's another manager who could have stepped in and led the Giants to the NL's best record (18-7).

Meanwhile, Baker has a proven record as one of the game's best managers. His unprecedented three manager-of-the-year awards show that the media sees him as a tremendous manager, too. He's been changing the attitude and outlook of the Cubs organization. The season is only one month old, but the Cubs are in first place in the NL Central.

By the way, Cubs outfielder Moises Alou played for his dad, Felipe, for five years in Montreal. Moises says he measures every other manager by his dad -- and Dusty is right there with his dad.
