As Barry Bonds closes in on 600 homers, we present this edition of Barry 600-homer trivia:

2002 SEASON STATISTICS
GM AB R HR RBI AVG
95 269 78 31 68 .353

  • It took Willie Mays four years to go from 500 home runs to 600. It took Hank Aaron three years. It took Babe Ruth two years. Barry Bonds hit his 500th last year. Amazing.

  • Two pitchers gave up home runs to both Bonds and the last man to reach 600 (and 700), Hank Aaron -- Rick Reuschel and Frank Tanana.

  • It's been 31 years since Aaron hit the last 600th homer. Before that, there had been a gap of a year and a half between Aaron and Willie Mays. Before that, 38 years passed between Babe Ruth's 600th and Mays' 600th.

  • Bonds has hit 41 of those homers off 12 Cy Young award winners -- eight apiece off Greg Maddux and John Smoltz; five off Orel Hershiser; three each off Steve Bedrosian, Tom Glavine, Dwight Gooden and Bret Saberhagen; two apiece off Doug Drabek, Randy Johnson and Fernando Valenzuela, and one each off Pedro Martinez and David Cone.

  • He has hit 48 of those homers off 18 pitchers who have thrown no-hitters -- 52 off 21 no-hit authors if you count combined no-hitters and no-hitters broken up in extra innings: Terry Mulholland (8), Tom Browning (5), A.J. Burnett (5), Tommy Greene (3), Darryl Kile (3), Ramon Martinez (3), Gooden (3), Saberhagen (3), Kevin Brown (2), Valenzuela (2), Kevin Gross (2), Hideo Nomo (2), Johnson (2), Mark Gardner (2), Cone (1), Al Leiter (1), Jose Jimenez (1), Kenny Rogers (1), Mark Langston (1) and Pedro Martinez (1).

  • Bonds has also hit 268 homers in defunct ballparks -- 140 in 3Com/Candlestick, 89 in Three Rivers, 17 in the Astrodome, 12 in Fulton County, 6 in County Stadium, 4 in Mile High.

  • And Barry has homered off six sets of brothers (Andy and Alan Benes, Al and Mark Leiter, Greg and Mike Maddux, Ramon and Pedro Martinez, Carlos and Pascual Perez, Tim and Todd Worrell) -- not to mention three ESPN employees (two off Jeff Brantley, two off Tom Candiotti, one off Rob Dibble).
