Buhner will remain a Mariner

ESPN.com news services

SEATTLE -- Mariners general manager Pat Gillick announced Monday that the team has re-signed free agent outfielder Jay Buhner, who agreed to a one-year contract covering the 2000 season.

ESPN's Peter Gammons says the contract is for just under $1 million guaranteed, but goes up to $1.5 million if Buhner is on the opening-day roster.

Gillick also announced that the Mariners have exercised the club's option on the contract of left-handed pitcher Jamie Moyer for the 2002 season.

"I've always planned on finishing my career with the Mariners," Buhner said. "Seattle is home for me and my family, and I'm excited about coming back next year. I'm glad we could get this worked out so we can all concentrate on having a successful 2000 season."

Buhner, 35, was limited to 87 games last season by injuries. Following off-season surgery on his right elbow, Buhner was on the disabled list from May 18-July 14 with a strained left hamstring. Buhner's on-base percentage of .388 was second on the team, trailing only Edgar Martinez's .447 mark. Buhner finished with a .222 average with 11 doubles and 14 home runs last year.

"We're pleased to have Jay signed for next season," Gillick said. "He's a key part of our organization both on and off the field."

In his 13-year career, Buhner has compiled a .254 average with 282 home runs and 878 RBI in 1,341 games. Buhner hit more than 40 home runs for three straight years (1995-97), before injuries limited him the past two seasons.

Since joining the Mariners on July 30, 1996, Moyer has posted a 52-24 mark in 107 starts, including going 14-8 with a 3.87 ERA in 32 starts in 1999. This season Moyer finished third in the AL in innings pitched (228.0), sixth in ERA, and seventh in winning percentage (.636).

"We are very happy to have Jamie for an additional year," said Gillick. "He is very important to our ballclub, both in the pitching rotation and in the clubhouse."

Moyer is 118-101 in 346 career games, 294 starts, with the Cubs (1986-88), Rangers (1989-90), Cardinals (1991), Orioles (1993-95), Red Sox (1996) and Mariners (1996-current).
