NEW YORK -- The New York Mets offered salary arbitration Tuesday to one player who walked away and another who walked the Atlanta Braves into the World Series.
John Olerud, who signed a three-year deal with the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday, and left-hander Kenny Rogers, whose bases-loaded walk to Andruw Jones knocked the Mets out of the NL Championship Series, were offered arbitration by the Mets before the midnight ET deadline. Outfielder Shawon Dunston also received an arbitration offer, but 41-year-old right-hander Orel Hershiser did not. The Mets may continue to negotiate with Rogers and Dunston through Jan. 8, but are not allowed to re-sign Hershiser until May 1. The Mets will receive compensation for the loss of Olerud, and made the offer in case any problem arises with his contract with the Mariners. Rogers was 5-1 in 12 starts after being acquired by the Mets from Oakland on July 23. However, he was a disappointment in the postseason when he was 0-3 with a 6.75 ERA. However, there might be a dispute over Rogers.
"We have a clause in his contract that says that if his option wasn't exercised, which it wasn't, because we had it removed, they can't offer arbitration," said Rogers' agent, Scott Boras. Dunston, also acquired just prior to the trade deadline, batted .344 in 42 games with New York. Hershiser, in his first year with the Mets, tied for the team lead in wins with ace Al Leiter. He was 13-12 in 32 starts with a 4.58 ERA. He had no record and did not allow a run in 5.1 postseason innings. |
