DH Baines signs one-year deal to return to Orioles

BALTIMORE (Ticker) -- After a brief stay with the Cleveland Indians, Harold Baines is returning to the Baltimore Orioles.

The veteran designated hitter today signed a one-year deal to return to the Orioles for the third time. Terms were not disclosed, but WBAL radio in Baltimore reported on Wednesday that is was worth $2 million.

The Orioles gave the 40-year-old Baines a chance to participate in the postseason by trading him to the Indians on August 27 for a pair of minor leaguers.

A six-time All-Star, Baines hit .271 in 28 games for the Indians, who were eliminated by Boston in the Division Series. Cleveland announced Wednesday that Baines, who made $1.5 million last season, would not be offered arbitration, making him a free agent.

Baines hit a combined .312 with 25 homers in 135 games last season and was named to his sixth All-Star team and first since 1991.

He helped the Orioles to the American League Championship Series in 1997 after being acquired from the Chicago White Sox. He first played for Baltimore from 1993-95.

Baines is a career .292 hitter with 474 doubles, 49 triples, 373 homers and 1,583 RBI in 2,702 games with Baltimore, Chicago, Oakland and the Texas Rangers.
