Giants non-tender utility player Santangelo

SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- The San Francisco Giants failed to tender a contract to F.P. Santangelo today, making the veteran utilityman a free agent.

In addition, the Giants tendered contracts to lefthander Alan Embree and righthanders John Johnstone and Felix Rodriguez.

Santangelo, a native of El Dorado Hills, California who resides in Sacramento, appeared in 113 games last season for the Giants after being released by the Montreal Expos. He hit .260 with three home runs and 26 RBI, appearing at second base, third base and all three outfield positions.

"To non-tender Santangelo was a very difficult decision for us because he is a versatile and hard-nosed player," Giants general manager Brian Sabean said.

The 32-year-old Santangelo is a career .252 hitter with 20 home runs and 145 RBI over five seasons with Montreal and the Giants.

Embree, 29, was 3-2 with a 3.38 ERA in 68 games.

Johnstone, 31, was 4-6 with a team-best 2.60 ERA and three saves in 62 appearances.

Rodriguez, 27, was 2-3 with a 3.80 ERA in 47 outings.

Today is the last day for teams to offer 2000 contracts to unsigned players before losing them to free agency.
