MESA, Ariz. -- Less than a week after he was fired by the Phillies, Terry Francona has arranged an interview for the managing vacancy of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Francona, 41, had been the youngest manager in the major leagues the past several seasons. The former University of Arizona star was fired Sunday before a final loss dropped Philadelphia's record this season to 65-97, tied with the Cubs for worst in the majors. Over the past four seasons, Francona's Phillies teams had an overall mark of 285-363. Francona told The Tribune, a newspaper serving suburban Phoenix, he will interview with Diamondbacks managing general partner Jerry Colangelo next Friday. "I'm actually pretty excited about going and just talking with them," Francona said. "I don't think I'm the right fit for all situations, but I just feel like maybe I am here," he said. "It's an honor they even called. The Diamondbacks fired Buck Showalter, the only manager Arizona has ever had, after the team failed to make the playoffs. Colangelo said that that time he would seek a new manager with an engaging personality with big league experience. "I think I do know what they're looking for," Francona said. "I hope I can articulate how I feel to them. I know how I feel, but when you're a baseball player, the interview process is kind of foreign." Francona was national player of the year at Arizona. During parts of 10 seasons in the major leagues, he hit .274. After his playing days were over, Francona spent four years as a manager in the White Sox farm system. He also managed in the Arizona Fall League, once in the Dominican Winter League and coached third base for the Detroit Tigers in 1996. |
