Report: Ichiro struck in head by quarters

ESPN.com news services

OAKLAND, Calif. – Mariners right fielder Ichiro Suzuki was struck in the head with quarters thrown by fans in Oakland during the Mariners' 5-1 victory Tuesday night, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported.

Ichiro wasn't injured and played the entire game.

For the first time in his week-long major league career, Ichiro was the target of boo-birds and signs razzing him. None of the razzing had ethnic overtones. The Mariners signed the former Japanese star in the offseason.

Ichiro is scheduled to sit out Wednesday night's game with left-hander Mark Mulder starting for Oakland. However, as with an earlier plan to give him Saturday off with left-hander Doug Davis starting for Texas, it is subject to change.

"Let's see how he does tonight," said manager Lou Piniella, who played Ichiro against Davis after Ichiro had four hits the previous night.
