SAN FRANCISCO Chicago Cubs pitcher Kyle Farnsworth was restrained by his teammates Friday night after he tried to go after a fan who had thrown peanuts and was verbally abusive.
The problem occurred while Farnsworth was warming up during the eighth inning of the Cubs' 7-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants. "This guy just kept taunting us," Cubs pitcher Courtney Duncan said. "He was using foul language. Farnsworth was smiling at first, but the fan obviously said something that didn't agree with him." Farnsworth, who refused to comment, walked off the bullpen mound toward the stands, and began to yell at the fan. His teammates stood between him and the fan.
"Farnsworth wanted to kill the guy," Duncan said. "It's OK for the fans to have a little fun, but he was throwing peanuts and getting personal."
The Cubs also came out of the dugout in support of Farnsworth, though manager Don Baylor said no one would have gone into the stands.
"I know my guys and they wouldn't have done that," he said. "There was a lot of profanity toward Farnsworth and sometimes it goes over the line. you can strike a nerve with one magic word. We were not going to take that."
The game was delayed for a minute or two. |
