SEATTLE Seattle pitcher Jose Paniagua was suspended for three games and fined an undisclosed amount Wednesday for throwing at Boston's Manny Ramirez in a May 9 game at Fenway Park. Frank Robinson, major league baseball's vice president of on-field operations, also fined Boston pitcher Frank Castillo an undisclosed amount for hitting John Olerud in the same game. Paniagua, who had his first save of the season Tuesday night in Seattle's 4-3 victory over Chicago, will appeal the punishment through the players' association, said Mariners general manager Pat Gillick. "We take exception to the ruling. I think based on a hearing, we think things that come out will be very positive for Jose," Gillick said. Paniagua, 27, said he apologized to Ramirez after the game. Both are from the Dominican Republic. "It surprised me," Paniagua said of the suspension. "I didn't hit nobody. ... Everybody knows I didn't try to hit him. The only one I don't want to hit in Boston is Manny." Paniagua said if he had known he would have three days off, he would have tried to travel home to the Dominican to visit his family. He said he has been fined and suspended a few other times.
