CHICAGO -- Sammy Sosa became the 33rd major leaguer to reach 400 career homers when he hit a two-run drive for the Chicago Cubs in the fourth inning Wednesday night. With the home run, Sosa passed Detroit Tigers' Hall of Famer Al Kaline on the all-time homer list. Sosa hit a 2-1 pitch from Houston starter Shane Reynolds into the right-field stands, tying it at 2. The 32-year-old Sosa is the second player to hit his 400th homer as a Cub, joining Ernie Banks. Sosa, who has 14 homers this season, has hit 371 of his 400 homers in 10 seasons with the Cubs (1992-2001). Third on the team's all-time homer list, Sosa trails only Banks (512) and Billy Williams (392). His first major league homer came June 21, 1989, when as a member of the Texas Rangers he homered off Boston's Roger Clemens. After being traded, Sosa hit his next 28 homers as a member of the Chicago White Sox. |
