Ankiel awaits next assignment

Associated Press

JUPITER, Fla. -- The St. Louis Cardinals kept a veil of secrecy around Rick Ankiel after he allowed only one hit in three innings Friday in the final intrasquad game of mini-camp.

Both Mike Jorgensen, director of player development, and Mark Riggins, minor league pitching coordinator, refused comment on the next step for the wild-throwing left-hander.

"They're discussing it," manager Tony La Russa said before the Cardinals played the Chicago White Sox on Friday night. "I know he's been enjoying himself and I know that's important."

General manager Walt Jocketty said a decision could be announced on Monday.

In what was likely his final outing in Florida, Ankiel threw 47 pitches, striking out seven and walking none. He gave up a line double in the third. Last Sunday, he pitched a four-inning no-hitter against Montreal Expos rookies, with six strikeouts, one walk and one hit batsman.

Jorgensen said all the players in the mini-camp were scheduled to leave Saturday for one of two rookie league teams. He declined to say where Ankiel was headed.

After making six starts in St. Louis and three at AAA Memphis earlier this spring, Ankiel was assigned to Class A Potomac of the Carolina League but was sent here for extended spring training followed by a weeklong mini-camp.
