Giambi now says it will take more to keep him in Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Jason Giambi's once nearly agreed-upon contract with the Oakland Athletics has been shelved, the AL MVP said Thursday.

During spring training, Giambi and the A's reportedly agreed on a $90 million, six-year deal. But the two sides disagreed over a no-trade clause that Giambi wanted.

Giambi, a free agent after this season, said Thursday that the proposal was no longer on the table, suggesting it would take more than just the no-trade clause to keep him in Oakland.

"I just want to get it out there that that's not going to get it done," Giambi said before Thursday night's game against Los Angeles.

Giambi's agent, Arn Tellem, told the San Francisco Chronicle that should talks resume before the end of the season, the two sides would start over.

"All I can say is that given that they were not willing to give Jason a no-trade clause, they didn't treat him like a hometown player, so there is no hometown discount," Tellem told the newspaper.

A's general manager Billy Beane has repeatedly said that re-signing Giambi is a top priority.

Meanwhile, the July 31 trade deadline looms, with the New York Yankees, Atlanta Braves and Boston Red Sox all reportedly interested in the first baseman.
