NEW YORK -- The Philadelphia Phillies, bolstering their bullpen for a playoff run, got relievers Turk Wendell and Dennis Cook from the New York Mets on Friday for minor league pitchers Bruce Chen and Adam Walker.
The trade came immediately after the Mets beat Philadelphia 6-1 at Shea Stadium. Moments later, the Phillies announced another deal, sending reliever Wayne Gomes to the San Francisco Giants for utilityman Felipe Crespo.
"I think we gained a whole lot of experience in the bullpen," Phillies manager Larry Bowa said. "They've been on winners. They know what it takes to win. They've pitched in pressure situations."
The Mets and Phillies made their second deal in a week. Earlier, Philadelphia sent Gary Bennett to the Mets for Todd Pratt in a swap of backup catchers.
Philadelphia, which already had depth in its bullpen, had set a goal of adding another reliever before Tuesday's trading deadline. The surprising Phillies trail Atlanta by one game in the NL East.
"I think our bullpen should be one of our strengths," Bowa said. "If we get our starters to go six innings and turn the ball over to them, we should be in good shape."
Cook and Wendell will be added to a bullpen that already includes closer Jose Mesa, Rick Bottalico and Rheal Cormier.
"We're both pretty good guys so I'm not worried about fitting in with anybody," Cook said.
The Mets, coming off a World Series appearance, are stuck at 47-57. Friday's trade could lead to further deals, possibly involving starters Glendon Rusch and Rick Reed.
"We were looking for guys close to the big leagues who could step in and help this year and next year," Mets general manager Steve Phillips said. "We were looking for major league-ready talent."
Wendell was coveted by the Phillies last winter when he was a free agent. Instead, the 34-year-old right-hander decided to stay with the Mets, signing a three-year deal worth one penny short of $9.4 million.
Cook, a 38-year-old lefty, played for the Phillies in 1989-90. He is in the final year of a contract that pays him $2.4 million this season.
"You know they're going to be missed," Mets manager Bobby Valentine said. "You won't hear me saying anything about either of them. They took the ball every day and they're terrific people."
Neither Wendell nor Cook pitched Friday night. Wendell is 4-3 with one save and a 3.51 ERA in 49 games and Cook is 1-1 with a 4.25 ERA in 43 games.
"We're going to miss them both," Mets captain John Franco said. "Not only in the bullpen but in the clubhouse, too."
Chen, 24, began the season with the Phillies and went 4-5 with a 5.00 ERA in 16 starts. The lefty was sent to Double-A Reading on July 6 and went to Triple-A Scranton six days later.
Chen was expected to join the Mets for Saturday afternoon's game against the Phillies.
Walker, 25, has pitched for Reading all season. The lefty was 7-4 with a 1.94 ERA in 14 starts. He led Phillies minor leaguers with 15 wins last year, and had a no-hitter and one-hitter this season.
Gomes pitched Friday night, giving up a home run to Mike Piazza. The 28-year-old righty led the Phillies in appearances in each of the last three seasons.
Gomes was 4-3 with one save and a 4.31 ERA in 42 games this season.
Crespo, designated for assignment Wednesday when the Giants acquired Andres Galarraga, was hitting .197 with four home runs and 10 RBI in 40 games for San Francisco.
In other roster moves, the Phillies designated infielder-outfielder Turner Ward for assignment and assigned reliever Ed Vosberg to Scranton.
Ward hit .267 in 17 games for the Phillies. Vosberg was 0-0 in 18 relief appearances. |
