Bonds has three dingers in two games

Associated Press

PHOENIX -- Barry Bonds stepped up his pursuit of baseball's home run record Friday night, hitting his 45th of the season against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The San Francisco slugger hit two homers Thursday night to move out of a tie with Mickey Mantle for ninth place on the career list.

Bonds' homer Friday night off Arizona left-hander Brian Anderson was the 539th of his career, nine short of Mike Schmidt for eighth place.

Bonds also became the quickest ever to 45, homering in San Francisco's 104th game this season. Mark McGwire hit his 45th in St. Louis' 105th game in 1998, when he finished with a record 70.

Bonds led off the fourth inning and drove a 1-1 pitch 436 feet into the right-field stands to tie the game at 2.

The Giants left fielder had gone a week without a homer and had just two hits in his previous 19 at-bats before he hit a solo shot in the fourth inning of San Francisco's 11-3 victory over Arizona on Thursday night.

Bonds then hit a grand slam in the fifth inning off Curt Schilling.
