OAKLAND, Calif. -- Bret Saberhagen, who spent 21 months working his way back from shoulder surgery to the major leagues, will retire at the end of the season.

The Boston Red Sox put Saberhagen on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday because of tightness in his right shoulder. The two-time Cy Young winner lasted only four innings the previous night.

"That's it, I'm all done," Saberhagen said after Boston lost to Oakland 6-1 Wednesday night.

"I still feel I can do a good job, but it's just not the same. I feel great about what I've accomplished, and I'm not giving up on this year by any means," he said.

Saberhagen was 1-2 with a 6.00 ERA in three starts this season, his first appearances in the majors since shoulder surgery in 1999.

Less than two weeks ago, Saberhagen drew by a standing ovation at Fenway Park after limiting the Chicago White Sox to one run and three hits in six innings.

Saberhagen's return was seen as a boost to Boston, which currently holds a half-game lead over Oakland for the AL wild card spot.

But in his next outing, he gave up six earned runs in five-plus inning against Anaheim.

And the 37-year-old Saberhagen left Tuesday night's 5-2 loss to the Athletics after four innings, giving up seven hits and three runs. He struck out five and walked none.

"After how my shoulder felt last night, I knew I wasn't living up to my standards I'd like to as far as playing and being that dominating pitcher again," he said. "It was pretty much enough is enough."

The Red Sox activated right-hander Frank Castillo from the 15-day disabled list to start against Oakland on Wednesday night.

Castillo took the loss. He had been on the DL with a right shoulder strain.

Tim Wakefield, scheduled to start Wednesday, will start Thursday while Hideo Nomo nurses a blister.
