SEATTLE -- Seattle Mariners manager Lou Piniella said Sunday that he does not expect shortstop Carlos Guillen back for the second round of the playoffs if the Mariners advance past the Division Series against Cleveland. Guillen returned to Safeco Field on Monday for the first time since being diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis Sept. 28. "That was nice," catcher Tom Lampkin said of seeing Guillen. "I think he's happy to be back out here, outside on the field even though he doesn't have a uniform on." Guillen, 26, was under quarantine in a Seattle hospital for several days. He has lost about 10 pounds. Piniella said Stan Javier will start in left field, Mark McLemore at shortstop and David Bell at third Tuesday in Game 1 of the Division Series against the Cleveland Indians. Shortstop Ramon Vazquez is expected to make the postseason roster. Tuberculosis is contagious, so Mariners players and their front-office staff underwent tests to make sure they aren't infected. The team expected to know the results Saturday, but they said the results wouldn't be disclosed publicly. Both the Mariners and Indians held off-day workouts Monday, one day before Game 1. Guillen was released from a hospital Thursday. The Mariners' team physician, Doctor Mitch Storey, says Guillen was sent home to rest, and will be re-examined Wednesday. Doctors placed a small artificial clot in one of Guillen's lungs Oct. 2 to stop minor bleeding. The bleeding was caused by a persistent cough that often accompanies tuberculosis, Storey said Wednesday. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report. |
