Free agent closer Jason Isringhausen has selected the St. Louis Cardinals over the Texas Rangers, ESPN's Peter Gammons reports. Isringhausen has agreed to a four-year, $27 million deal with the Cardinals. The team has called a news conference for 3 p.m. ET Monday to announce Isringhausen's signing.
Earlier Friday, Rangers owner Tom Hicks told the Dallas Morning News that Isringhausen turned down the Rangers' four-year offer for $30 million. "This had nothing to do with money or who would win more quickly," Hicks told the Morning News. "This was about family. After meeting with his family and talking to them until 4 a.m. (Thursday), Jason decided that he wanted to play near his hometown." Isringhausen, born in Brighton, Ill., had 67 saves in the last two seasons for the Oakland Athletics. He had 34 saves (in 43 opportunities) in 2001. |
