NEW YORK -- Another day, another trade for the New York Mets.
One day after acquiring slugger Mo Vaughn, the Mets added an outfielder on Friday when they obtained switch-hitter Gary Matthews Jr. from the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash considerations. Matthews, 27, already joins his fourth team since breaking into the majors in 1999. He split last season between the Chicago Cubs and Pirates and established career bests with a .227 average, 15 doubles, 14 home runs, 44 RBI and 63 runs in 152 games. The son of the former major league outfielder nicknamed "Sarge," Matthews batted .222 with seven RBI in 23 games for San Diego in 1999. Since struggling to a disappointing 82-80 record last season, the Mets have added Vaughn, All-Star second baseman Roberto Alomar, outfielder Roger Cedeno, righthander David Weathers and lefthanders Mark Guthrie and Shawn Estes to the roster. And they reportedly are involved in the bidding for free agent outfielder Juan Gonzalez. |
