SEATTLE -- Bad news for "the sheriff."
Veteran Mariners reliever Norm Charlton, who injured his left
shoulder while working out in the past week, must undergo surgery
to repair a torn rotator cuff, the team said Tuesday.
The 38-year-old left-hander will have surgery Monday, the
Mariners said.
Recovery time for this particular type of tear is about one
year, said Dr. Larry Pedegana, team physician.
"We will know more after the surgery on Monday," said
Pedegana.
The Mariners last month re-signed Charlton to a $1.25 million,
one-year contract in an effort to keep together the bullpen that
helped the Mariners win an AL-record 116 games last season.
Charlton returned to the Mariners last season for his third
stint with the club. He was 4-2 with a 3.02 ERA and
had one save in 44 appearances.
Charlton made four appearances with Triple-A Tacoma on a rehab
assignment while he was on the disabled list with a pulled groin. He also made three appearances in the 2001 postseason play and did
not allow a run in 3 1/3 innings pitched.
